BJP top brass to meet on UP polls today

With an eye on the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, senior BJP leaders from the state will be holding a meeting on Wednesday. The meeting, chaired by party chief Nitin Gadkari and other central leaders, will take stock of the party’s preparation for the state Assembly polls, scheduled in 2012.

Some of the leaders from the state who are expected to attend the meeting are Rajya Sabha MP and head of election committee for the UP polls Kalraj Mishra, former party chief Rajnath Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Katiyar and the party’s national vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
Sources disclosed that the BJP top brass has asked its state leaders and the state unit to project a united face of the party in the state and aggressively take up issues of corruption and deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The party is often in news for growing factionalism in its state unit. The party has 51 members in the 403-member state Assembly.
The party, which desperately wants to better its position in the state, has also asked its leaders to get in touch with the party’s old cadre in the state. For selection of candidates, a three-level screening committee will be set up.
