BJP top brass meets on Bihar
A crucial meeting of the BJP’s top brass began on the future of its alliance with the JD(U), in the backdrop of Bihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar returning the Gujarat government’s Kosi relief fund, began late on Tuesday evening. The meeting was attended by the party top brass, including BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi, state unit chief C.P. Thakur and Ravishankar Prasad.
Creating fresh strain in the BJP-JD(U) relationship, Bihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar on Tuesday sent a Bihar police team to Surat to enquire into the advertisements put out in Patna newspapers about the Gujarat government’s Kosi flood relief aid to Bihar. But an angry BJP reacted swiftly, prompting Mr Kumar to call back the team.
Sources disclosed despite a section within the party’s Bihar unit demanding that the central leadership give a stern message to Bihar chief minister for showing “arrogance”, the central leadership is in favour of continuing the alliance.
Earlier in the day, Mr Sushil Modi met senior BJP leader and NDA working chairman L.K. Advani. Both leaders discussed the future of the troubled alliance in the state. Mr Advani, it is believed, is in favour of continuing the alliance.
Sources said Mr Sushil Kumar Modi also met JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav and had a telephonic conversation with the Bihar chief minister.
Mr Sushil Kumar Modi, who had earlier refused to participate in the Nitish Kumar-led Vishwas Yatra, now intends to be part of the programme, which kicks off on June 25.
