BJP top leaders discuss strategy

On the eve of the results for the crucial Assembly elections in five states, including politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, BJP top brass on Monday met to formalise the party’s strategy to deal with various post-poll scenarios. Even as the BJP has officially made it clear that it would prefer to sit in the Opposition rather than support any combination in UP, sources disclosed, politics is all about 'possibilities'.

The top brass discussed a number of options to be thrown by the results, mainly in UP, where the party is hopeful of even reaching the second position. The BJP top brass also held a meeting of its media committee members and party spokespersons. Once the poll results are out, the BJP parliamentary board is also expected to meet on Tuesday.

When asked whether it will form any post-poll alliance in UP, where SP and BSP are key regional players, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said, “Our stand has been clear since day one...no post-poll alliance with SP or BSP.” He also alleged that there is “a secret understanding” between the Congress and the SP and BSP.

Sources disclosed, of the five states where the Assembly polls were held, as per the feed back received by it, the BJP is confident of winning Goa. In Uttarakhand, where the party is in power currently, there are 50-50 chances as Congress proved to a tough competitor. In Punjab, party insiders say anti-incumbency against the Parkash Singh Badal government might give Congress an edge over the ruling SAD-BJP alliance.

While in politically-sensitive UP, most of the exit polls have placed BJP at the third position, the party is confident that it can even come at the second position.

The party is heavily banking on the OBC voters, which it is of the view voted for it in the wake of Congress led UPA promising nine per cent sub-quota from the 27 per cent quota of the OBC. Also, party is hopeful that it will gain from the 'floating' voters and the youth voters, who are looking for an alternative to ruling BSP and SP.
