Black money: Pranab to white out Centre’s stand
Jan. 20: After the Supreme Court’s rap, the Union cabinet on Thursday took up the issue of black money stashed away in foreign banks. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself raised the issue and stressed on the need to make the government’s stand clear in the backdrop of the apex court’s observations making media headlines.
Taking note of the Supreme Court’s harsh observations in which it said black money stashed in Swiss banks is a mind-boggling theft of national wealth, sources disclosed that the prime minister himself raised the issue and asked finance minister Pranab Mukherjee to hold a press conference and clear the government’s stand. Dr Singh, sources said, expressed concern the over apex court’s observations making headlines.
Later, several ministers noted that the government was facing flak from virtually all quarters and the impression that was gaining ground was that the government had something to hide on the issue, sources said.
Dr Singh pointed out that the government could not disclose the names about whom it had information regarding accounts in foreign banks, as it was bound by various treaties.
