‘Blame for DMK losses rests on all members’
Seeking to silence the internal grumbling that his family’s domination caused poll debacle in the state, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said on Saturday that the blame belonged to all in the party.
Addressing the opening session of the two-day DMK executive meeting here, he lamented that the party ended up in the Opposition rows despite being confident of a mammoth win in the Assembly election. “There would be no need to ask the question who caused this situation if we realise that we alone created this result. I have realised this. I do not want to hurt anyone here by repeating what we all know if we touch our conscience,” said the octogenarian Dravidian chief.
“We are now starting from zero, again, but confident that the DMK flag will once again fly high,” Mr Karunanidhi said, sounding emotional, addressing the large packed pandal at Singanallur here. “The DMK is an iron fort. It’s not some rust that can be blown away. None can shake this pillar,” he declared. He insisted that a party’s policy is not dictated by an electoral outcome. “Even a fool will not say that the AIADMK scored its victory due to its principles and policies,” he said, but then contradicted himself admitting later that the election result “is a defeat suffered by our policies and principles, our progeny and future leadership”. “DMK worker, who shed his blood for the growth of the party, is now crying that we have suffered such a huge defeat. But we must not see this as a defeat,” Mr Karunanidhi said, reminding the gathering that the party had bounced back from bigger debacles, such as during the election following Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, when the DMK was routed except for his lone win in Harbour.
