Booth scam probe indicts minister

Chandigarh: Top Congress leadership in the city, including a Union minister, along with some officials of Chandigarh police and Union Territory Estate Office, have come under scanner in connection with alleged irregularities in allotment of booths in the city, officials said on Wednesday.
City MP and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, UT adviser Pradip Mehra, former Mayor Pradeep Chhabra, former DC R.K. Rao, three DSPs and eight officials of the UT estate office have been accused of making around 90 fraudulent allotments of booths in certain sectors, they said.
UT's former Additional Deputy Commissioner PS Shergill, who had probed the irregularities in the allotment of over 2500 booths during 2002 and 2008, had also recommended a CBI inquiry into the scandal involving crores of rupees.
In his inquiry report submitted to the UT administration, Shergill had found direct or indirect involvement of the top officials of UT administration and police along with some city-based Congress leaders in the alleged scandal.
The scam was unearthed a few months back following which Shergill, who was the then ADC, was appointed to probe the matter by UT administrator Shivraj V Patil.
Patil ordered the probe on March last year following a series of complaints.
However, Bansal when contacted said, "I am not aware of any inquiry...once I go through the entire details of the contents of reports I will make a comment...I am open to scrutiny."
