Boy dies after teacher bangs head against wall
The incidents of corporal punishment continue in West Bengal as a Class 3 student succumbed to his injuries after being hit by a teacher for being mischievous inside the classroom.
Eight-year-old Bapi Joadder of Shishu Shiksha Kendra at Nirdeshkhali of Basanti in South 24 Parganas was allegedly hit against the wall by his class teacher, Champa Mondal.
The Basanti police has arrested the teacher and charged her with murder.
According to sources, Bapi was playing pranks with his classmates while the teacher was taking the class on Wednesday. Seeing this, Ms Mondal hit Bapi against the wall to punish him, which left him severely wounded. The boy was rushed to the Canning sub-divisional Hospital in a critical condition. However, as his condition deteriorated, he was first shifted to Chittaranjan Medical College and Hospital and later to SSKM.
However, the boy succumbed to his injuries on early Friday morning.
SSKM hospital medical super Tamal Kanti Ghosh said, “The boy died around 4.45 am. He suffered internal haemorrhage due to extreme blood loss. Since this is a police case, post-mortem would be conducted.”
Meanwhile, as the news of the boy’s death spread in his village, local people protested in front of the school.
Teachers and staff did not attend the school due to the incident. School education minister Bratya Basu said that strict action would be taken against the accused teacher.
However, Ms Champa Mondal claimed that she was handling students of five classes together as other teachers were attending a governing body meeting.
Being the mother of two children, she also claimed that she did not hit the boy to kill him.
