Brinda: GoM on Bhopal meaningless
The CPI (M) on Sunday demanded an independent inquiry into all aspects of the Bhopal Gas tragedy saying that a Group of Ministers (GoM) will not be able to probe the alleged failure of state agencies.
Talking to reporters here, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said, “Creation of a GoM to look into the Bhopal gas tragedy is meaningless. How government can say that former CEO of the Union Carbide Corporation Warren Anderson was allowed to leave the country due to law and order situation ?”. There should an independent probe into the issue, she added.
She further said, “What the government is saying is an attempt to evade its responsibilities, the responsibilities of government of that time and that of main office-bearers of that government. This is shameful”. There are certain questions — who was responsible for Anderson’s escape and whether then Prime Minister had information about it or not — which needed to be answered, she said.
“The country wants to know that how much was the American pressure that an accused was treated like a state guest. They only refrained from giving Anderson a gun salute,” she said. Demand for extradition of Anderson is more relevant as the government is trying to go ahead with the nuclear liability bill.
When asked about Mamata Banerjee’s claim that Assembly elections could be advanced in West Bengal, Ms Karat said, “The decision will be taken by the Election Commission”.
