The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) claimed on Friday that around 250 murders have been taking place every day ever since the Akhilesh Yadav government came to power in Uttar Pradesh.

“On an average, three to four murders are taking place in every district and the statewide average in the past 40 days has been 250 to 3,000 murders a day.

Criminals are receiving protection form the ruling Samajwadi Party and a reign of terror is prevailing in the state,” said state BSP president Swami Prasad Maurya while addressing a press conference here on Friday.

Handing out a list of some 'prominent' murders that have taken place in the past few days, the BSP leader said that chief minister Akhilesh Yadav should take some stern steps to control the law and order situation at the earlier or else his image of being the youngest chief minister would take a beating.

Mr Maurya said that the Samajwadi Party did not have a positive agenda and was wasting all its energy
in criticising the BSP regime.

He said that the law and order situation in the Mayawati regime was optimum and criminals were forced to toe the line.

To a question that if the situation was so good then why the people rejected the BSP in the polls, Mr
Maurya said, “The people did not reject us. The Congress and BJP transferred their votes to the SP to vote us out of power and the sops offered by the Samajwadi Party also misled the people.”

He said that despite being a victim of conspiracy by the Congress, the BSP was supporting the Congress government at the centre and also in Uttarakhand only because it wanted to keep communal forces at bay.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
