BSP defers decision on support to UPA
The Bahujan Samaj Party, on Wednesday, deferred decision on the issue of support to the UPA government. The party has authorised its president Ms Mayawati to take the decision at the appropriate time. Ms Mayawati told reporters that the decision on support to the UPA would be taken “soon”.
The BSP president, however, said that she would now work towards strengthening her party and preparing for the Lok Sabha polls on a war-footing since the general elections could be held earlier than scheduled. She said that the meeting of the BSP’s national executive, held on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, discussed at length the issue of BSP support to the UPA government.
She informed that the national executive of the BSP and the parliamentary party had entrusted the responsibility of taking the final call to her and she would communicate her decision soon.
“The national executive criticised the anti-people policies of the UPA government. The policies of the centre are not in the interests of religious minorities, the poor, dalits, OBCs and other sections of society. We had extended our support to the UPA government in the hope that this government will weaken communal forces and protest the interests of the deprived sections of society but the centre’s attitude has been disappointing. The UPA has also failed to check corruption which has weakened the economy,” she said.
Ms Mayawati said that the impact of her rally on Tuesday indicated that the BSP would show good results in the next Lok Sabha elections and her party would emerge as a balance of power.
She said that the BSP would now hold cadre camps and meetings to create awareness about the prevailing situation and the lack of performance of the UPA government which was not taking any firm steps to curb rising prices of food and essential commodities as well as corruption.
