Bus door juts out, poses life threat

Chennai: Pedestrians and motorists along the Porur-Tambaram stretch should watch out for a malfunctioning automated door jutting out of an MTC bus (IYI 2460) being operated in the stretch for a few days now. Officials of the Iyappanthangal depot continue to neglect the danger to commuters and public and are yet to repair the faulty door.
“The automated door at the front side of a bus (route number 166: Iyappanthangal - Tambaram) has been precariously jutting out of the body for the past few days,” said Mr Senthil Kumar, a software engineer from Kattuppakkam.
He said the protruding door might hit pedestrians — who are forced to walk on the roads due to encroachments on the pavements — or motorists. “It could even lead to a fatal accident. The rear-side door of the same bus was jutting out a few days back, but they set it right when they saw me taking picture of it. But it is the front side now jutting out from the bus,” Mr Kumar noted and added that it would also affect the rear view of the driver. The automated doors were fitted in MTC buses for the safety of passengers and to avoid footboard travelling. When asked, an MTC official said: “After the four students’ death, we have directed all branch managers to strictly monitor the maintenance of buses. If a specific case is brought to our notice, due action will be taken.”
