C Perumal MLA passes away: Jayalalithaa rushes to share kin’s grief
Salem: AIADMK legislator C. Perumal representing Yercaud constituency died of cardiac arrest on Thursday at his house in Pappanaickenpatti near Vazhapadi.
The 62-year-old party loyalist had won the reserved (ST) seat thrice since contesting under the ‘cock’ symbol in 1989 under the leadership of Jayalalithaa when the AIADMK had split after founder MGR’s death. He scored a huge 37,500 margin in 2011 polls.
Chief minister Jayalalithaa, who was in Kodanad, reached Salem by flight from Coimbatore and paid her last respects. She consoled Perumal’s wife Saroja and four sons, and assured them they would continue to receive her love and affection, eyewitnesses said.
After passing SSLC, Perumal had worked as a clerk at Attur post office for 10 years. He resigned his job to contest and win as Jayalalithaa’s candidate in 1989.
