Cab Secy: Spare the name
In an apparent bid to stem the volume of criticism of programmes named after Congress leaders of the past, the government has directed all ministries to sparingly use the names of leaders like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi because the implementation and impact of these progra-mmes is not in tune with the expectations of the people.
In a letter addressed to all the Central ministers, Cabinet Secretary Chandrasekhar has called on them to refrain from indiscriminately using the names of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi for welfare schemes. Many schemes are named after former Congress stalwarts, such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Indira Awas Yojana and Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission.
Mr Chandrasekhar says in his letter, “I have been directed to convey that there is a need to be sparing and selective in associating names of national leaders with such programmes to prevent proliferation of such nomenclature.”
Complaints are galore that these Central schemes, which are being funded by the Centre, are misrepresented to people by states ruled by the Opposition as their own initiatives. The latest to join the chorus of complaints is the one levelled by Union urban development minister Jaipal Reddy when he launched a thinly-veiled attack on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for not appreciating the amount of `7,998 crores given under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission for developing the infrastructure of many cities in Gujarat.
