Cabinet to okay rural mission
Focusing on providing skills to the unemployed rural youth, the government is all set to bury the unproductive Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), replacing it with the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM).
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is likely to approve the revamped NRLM on Thursday. A review of the SGSY had shown that the pace of self-help group SHG formation in north and east India was not very encouraging.
While just 40 per cent of SHGs were formed in the northern and eastern states, where the rural BPL population is about 63 per cent of the total country’s rural BPL population, 33 per cent SHGs were formed in the southern states where the rural BPL population is only 11 per cent of the country.
