CabSec is overseer, Kalmadi hangs on
With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar to oversee preparations for the Commonwealth Games to be held here in October, the top bureaucrat held a meeting with the secretaries of the key ministries concerned with the event.
Sources said the government at the moment is not in favour of removing Mr Suresh Kalmadi from the post of CWG Organising Committee chairman unless the charges against him are proved. But, since very little time is left till the start of the Games, and with allegations being levelled against the OC almost daily, it has been decided that the Cabinet Secretary be entrusted with the task of overseeing preparations for the Games, they added.
It is believed that Mr Chandrasekhar took stock of preparations at the meeting and sought details from senior officers, including secretaries in the sports and urban development ministries and the chief secretary of Delhi.
Meanwhile, the Congress top brass, including the Prime Minister and party president Sonia Gandhi, also took stock of the situation at a meeting of the Congress core group. It is believed that the senior leaders discussed and deliberated the evolving of a fresh mechanism to supervise the event in the backdrop of a slew of corruption allegations and the delay in completion of various Games projects.
The meeting is also believed to have discussed options such as an oversight panel to steer the Games without further controversy.
Sources said the core group has left it to the government to decide how best the Games can be successfully organised. “A final decision on the issue is expected to be taken soon by the Prime Minister after he discusses it with sports minister M.S. Gill because of constraints like the very short time left for the Games,” they said.
