CAG frowns at Israel defence deal
Yet another defence deal with Israel is under the scanner of the Comptroller and Auditor General.
A recent CAG report found that “recce pods” (to be installed on Sukhoi fighter aircraft) procured from Israel were not selected nor evaluated as per the defence procurement procedure.
The CAG report stated that “the pods have not met performance parameters in trials in India”.
The MoD had concluded a contract with the Israeli defence firm in December 2004 for the “recce system” at a cost of Rs 640 crores. Most of the supplies were made between December, 2007 and March 2009. A payment of Rs 611 crores has already been made.
However, the CAG report found that the “functionality of the Electro Optic/Infra Red (EO/IR pods) is still to be proven by the Indian Air Force due to the large number of problems persisting in the system” and that the “EO/IR has both hardware and software bugs”.
