CAG may finish Games audit within 14 days
The CAG is likely to finish the audit in connection with the Commonwealth Games-2010, initiated post conclusion of the Games, within the fortnight and the report will be submitted in Parliament in the next session.
While the CAG all set to turn the Centre’s scanner on the scandal-hit CWG, the first draft of the CAG report is expected to be complete by the end of December. This means CAG could pre-empt the PMO-appointed probe panel, ironically headed by former CAG chief V.K. Shunglu. “The Shunglu panel is likely to hand over its report by December 20,” said sources in the CAG.
A highly placed source in the CAG added, “ CAG’s preliminary inquiries have revealed widespread irregularities in contracts and projects of various agencies connected with the Games, at the level of both the Central government and agencies of the Delhi government.” The official further said, “The CAG had voiced its concern about CWG projects over a year ago when it suo moto handed over a report to the government on the delay in projects and the lack of preparedness to host such a major sporting event. However, not much attention was given to the CAG concern over the Games preparations.” The CAG officials are alleging that the CAG concerns were a sort of “aide to management” and flashed out a serious warning, however the government chose to ignore it.
