CAG slams Army for golf club
Apart from criticising defective acquisitions for the Army, a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has attacked the Army commander of the 2 Corps in 2006-07 for constructing a building for a golf club in Ambala cantonment “under the cover of sanctions issued for carrying out special repairs ...”.
According to the Comptroller and Auditor General report, an unauthorised club building having a restaurant, bar, kitchen and library was constructed.
The CAG report criticised a contract for acquisition of outdated anti-tank missiles of 1970s vintage for the Army at a cost of Rs 587 crores despite the fact that “third-generation missiles” are available globally.
The CAG also severely criticised the ministry of defence for gross insensitiveness even in making emergency procurements. The report stated that assault boats, required urgently by the Army, could not be procured for over six years despite availability of budget.
The Comptroller and Auditor General also slammed the acquisition of the multi-barrel rocket launcher system which was imported at a cost of Rs 2,633 crore but which had “critical defects” in its sub-systems. The report also lambasted the acquisition of integrated oxygen and communication mask helmets which were procured without high altitude trials.
