Calling people from NE 'chinki' could land you in jail
In a move that's being praised nationwide, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked states and UTs to take action against those using the word 'chinki' to describe people from the North East of India.
'Chinki' remains an offensive term and many believe it's a racial slur.
An offender will be dealt with under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The MHA measure is the first direct action to target incidents of racism and discrimination towards the people of North-East India.
