CBI asked about notings, were tinkered with: A-G
Attorney-general Goolam E. Vahanvati, who earlier explained in detail to the Supreme Court about his “four-line note” on the 2G issue in his capacity as solicitor-general, on Wednesday took strong exception to media reports quoting “CBI sources” that he had been “questioned” by the investigative agency.
He made a submission to this effect before a bench comprising Justices G.S. Singhvi and A.K. Ganguly, which in a lighter vein suggested it would not be surprising if there were reports later suggesting the CBI has even questioned “this court”.
Anguished over the media reports, which he termed “baseless”, the A-G said emotionally: “I don’t know what wrong I committed in (a) previous life that the media is after me ... (with) such reports that the CBI ‘grilled’ me.” Later, explaining the entire issue to reporters outside the court, Mr Vahanvati said senior CBI officials had approached him for certain clarifications on the 2G case. The department of telecommunications had earlier sent him a press release, seeking his comments, which he sent back after making certain “notings” on it. The notings had later been “tinkered” with, and the CBI had come to ask him about it, Mr Vahanvati explained, and asked the media if this should be called “grilling or questioning”?
The CBI manual notes the A-G is the seniormost law officer, whom the agency should always consult.
