CBI books 45 ‘fake’ foreign students
Investigations have revealed that several foreign students have used fake citizenship documents to secure admission to premier technical education institutes, including National Institute of Technology, in the country. The CBI has booked 45 foreign students for seeking admission through fraudulent means and has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to unveil whether the issue has wider implications and a well-entrenched racket is in progress in the education sector.
After these cases of misrepresentation of facts by foreign students taking admission in the country’s educational institutions were revealed, the Union ministry of external affairs has also requested all institutions to verify the authenticity proof or citizenship card of the students.
In a directive issued to educational institutes, the MEA has asked them to conduct a strict check of such documents before any admission is granted to foreign citizens.
These students were found to have secured admission mainly in engineering institutes of the country. “The CBI has booked 11 students in Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, 19 students in Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, one in National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, and 14 in National Institute of Technology, Trichy, for securing admission in these institutes through fraudulent means,” sources added.
