CBI chief: No tiff with IB over probe
Amidst growing rift between the two Central agencies over the questioning of Rajendra Kumar, special director (Intelligence Bureau) in connection with the Ishrat Jahan encounter case probe, CBI director Ranjit Sinha on Saturday categorically said “nobody is above the law”.
Talking exclusively to this newspaper, Mr Sinha said, “The CBI is simply probing a criminal case and needs to examine all those against whom the agency has sufficient evidence. Where is the issue of rift between the two Central agencies?”.
The CBI wants to question the senior IB officer as part of its probe to unearth the “conspiracy” which led to the encounter of Ishrat Jahan. The CBI is likely to question Mr Kumar on Tuesday in connection with the case.
“Even the Gujarat HC has directed us to complete the probe at the earliest and file the chargesheet in the case by the end of this month. Recording statement of the senior IB officer is crucial for filing the chargesheet in this case,” said Mr Sinha. No attempt should be made to give a new twist to the case, he added. When asked about the Gujarat high court criticism for CBI focusing its probe more on the genuineness of the inputs provided by the IB which led to the encounter of Ishrat, Mr Sinha said, “We are not probing the genuineness of the input at all. The CBI is focusing its probe only on unearthing the conspiracy behind the alleged encounter of the 19-year old Mumbai-based teenager.” To say that the CBI is probing the authenticity of the input will not be true at all, he said.
