CBI: A child marriage victim, but ambitious

The quest for a posting close to her Borunda village, in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district, led Bhanwari Devi to her first interaction with local politicians. Suspended Congress MLA Malkhan Singh was the first and resulted in an intimate relationship between the two. She was also a victim of child marriage.

The CBI chargesheet focuses on Bhanwari’s journey from her birthplace of Kishangarh, in Ajmer, and describes her as an ambitious woman who liked to live in the limelight. Her rope-dancer Nat community treated her like a star because she was the first among them to get an education up to Class 10 and to get a government job. The chargesheet throws light on her versatile personality: besides her placement as a nurse and midwife at a government primary health centre, Bhanwari also acted in local videos and emerged as a singer.
According to the chargesheet, she dreamed of becoming an MLA or corporator after she came into contact with the politicians like Malkhan Singh and former minister Mahipal Maderna. The turning point in her life came when she called on Malkhan Singh in 2002 for a posting close to her in-laws’ house in Borunda. She got her first posting in Jaisalmer in 1999. According to the chargesheet, she then came to know of a practice prevalent for such transfers and postings at desired places. At that time Malkhan’s father, the now deceased Ram Singh Bishnoi, was an MLA and had political clout.
According to the chargesheet, she got transferred to Benan with Malkhan Singh’s help and subsequently they developed a physical relationship. Malkhan introduced her to Maderna as a friend in 2003 and Maderna also developed a relationship with Bhanwari. The chargesheet said she born in a very poor family in a town in Ajmer district in 1976 and her parents married her off to Amarchand when she was only 12 years old. She sent to her in-laws five years after her wedding.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
