CBI court dismisses Kalmadi’s bail plea
There was no relief for sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee (OC) chief Suresh Kalmadi with a special CBI court on Monday dismissing his bail plea saying that “allegations against him were of serious in nature”.
Kalmadi was arrested on April 26 by the Central Bureau of Investigation for his alleged role in awarding an illegal contract to a Swiss firm for time scoring and result (TSR) system for the mega sporting event, causing a loss of over `100 crores to the public exchequer.
Dismissing Kalmadi’s bail application, CBI special Judge Talwant Singh said, “The gravity of the offence being of very serious nature for causing loss to the government of India and unlawful gain to a private vendor to the tune of more than `95 crores, I am of the view that the accused is not entitled to a bail at this stage.” The court further went on saying that he is an influential person who was exercising full control over the OC as its chairman and most of the witnesses are his appointees or the employees of the CWG Organising Committee.
Allowing the contention of the CBI that if enlarged on bail at this juncture, Mr Kalmadi, might try to influence witnesses, the court dismissed his bail plea.
