CBI to file Sachan case closure report soon

The CBI is all set to file a closure report in the mysterious death of deputy chief medical officer (CMO) Y.S. Sachan, who was found dead in Lucknow district jail on June 22, 2011.

Sachan was a suspect in two murder cases related to the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam in Uttar Pradesh.

According to sources, the agency’s probe has not revealed anything suspicious.

Sources said the agency sleuths reconstructed the chain of events and also used the services of forensic experts from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to probe if Sachan was murdered.

“Even after re-examination of the forensic reports several times, the agency officials did not find anything suspicious.

The agency sleuths also questioned certain officials and inmates of Lucknow Jail in connection with the case. Doctors were also of the opinion that the nature of injuries on Sachan’s body could have been self-inflicted,” sources said.

Large-scale irregularities in the implementation of NRHM programme in UP came to light after two CMOs — V.K. Arya and B.P. Singh — were shot in Lucknow within a period of six months in 2011.

Deputy CMO Sachan, who was an accused in both the murder cases, was found dead in Lucknow jail. The agency, which has so far registered 13 cases in the NRHM scam, is probing the murder cases of the two CMOs also.

Sachan was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a toilet in the Lucknow jail in June 2011 after which the CBI was handed over the investigations in July.

and a murder case was registered. “The agency probe has revealed that Sachan was under immense mental pressure because of police investigations against him,” sources said.

The alleged irregularities in utilisation of about Rs 10,000 crore of central funds allocated under the NRHM in UP, has so far claimed six lives.

Those who have died include, two CMOs—Dr VK Arya and Dr BP Singh, Dy CMO—Y S Sachan, Sunil Verma (a project manager of UP Jal Nigam who handled NRHM projects), Dr Shailesh Yadav (Dy CMO) and Mahendra Sharma, a clerk with the state health department.
