CBI focus on foreign consultants
The CBI, which is probing various cases of alleged corruption in the conduct of the Games, has also started probing the alleged irregularities committed in appointing certain foreign consultants for the event by the Organising Committee.
The agency is all set to question OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi on Monday or Tuesday in connection with appointment of foreign consultants for the conduct of the Games. The CBI, however, is yet to register a formal FIR in connection with this aspect of suspected corruption in the CWG.
According to sources the agency officials will question Mr Kalmadi in connection with its probe into the appointment of the Event Knowledge Service as a technical consultant for the Games. The EKS, a company hired for `29 crores as a technical consultant for the Games, was allegedly given undue favours by the OC members, sources added.
“An interim report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India had already said that the EKS deal was an example of undue favours, sources added. The CBI officials want to know who finally gave the approval for hiring EKS as consultant and also the date of approval,” sources said.
Sources further said, “The CBI officials have also collected details of the financial transactions between OC and Australian company SMAM.”
“Initial probe by the agency has revealed that payments worth over `50 crore were allegedly been made by the OC to the Australian firm,” sources added.
