CBI grills Trai former adviser
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned former member of the Talcum Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), D.P.S. Seth, in connection with its probe into the 2G Spectrum scam involving former telecom minister A. Raja. The agency may soon question former telecom minister Raja also in connection with the alleged scam.
According to sources the agency also questioned former deputy director-general (access services) in the department of telecommunications (DoT), Mr A.K. Srivastava on Friday. Srivastava was questioned for second time, sources added.
Sources said, “After completing the questioning of Mr. Seth and Mr. Srivastava, the agency will start questioning of R K Chandolia, former personal secretary to Mr. Raja”. The Enforcement Directorate has already questioned Mr Chandolia, sources added.
Sources said that Mr Seth and Srivastava might be summoned for questioning again.
The CBI has registered a case saying there was large-scale corruption in the allocation of 2G radio spectrum licences last year. The ED has also registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in the month of March this year against unknown officials of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and representatives of certain private companies in connection with the award of new telecom licenses in 2008.
“Some senior DoT officers allegedly granted unified access services licenses to a few selected companies at nominal rate by rejecting the applications of the others without any valid reasons thereby causing wrongful loss to the government and corresponding wrongful gain to private persons or companies. The licenses were awarded to certain companies by putting a cap on the number of applicants against the recommendations of the TRAI”, sources said.
