CBI likely to question Raja on 2G
The CBI is likely to question former telecom minister A. Raja in connection with its probe into the 2G spectrum scam very soon. Besides, the ED, which is also probing the 2G scam, may soon question Mr Raja in connection with the alleged scam.
According to sources, on the basis of recent questioning of certain officials of the department of telecommunications (DoT), the CBI is now preparing to question Mr Raja in connection with the 2G scam. The agency questioned former deputy director-general (access services) in the DoT, A.K. Srivastava again on Monday.
“The CBI is also planning to question R.K. Chandolia, former personal secretary to Mr Raja, in connection with its probe. The ED has already questioned Mr Chandolia,” sources said.
The CBI has registered a case saying that there was largescale corruption in the allocation of 2G radio spectrum licences in 2009. The ED has also registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in the month of March this year against unknown officials of the DoT and representatives of certain private companies in connection with the award of new telecom licences in 2008.
The ED has already issued summons to nine private telecom companies in connection with its probe. Some senior DoT officers allegedly granted unified access services licenses to a few selected companies at nominal rate by rejecting the applications of the others without any valid reasons thereby causing wrongful loss to the government and corresponding wrongful gain to private persons or companies. The licences were awarded to certain companies by putting a cap on the number of applicants against the recommendations of the Trai, sources said.
