CBI may file case in Adarsh scam today

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to register a regular case in connection with the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society scam in a day or two.
Talking to this newspaper, Mr R.K. Gaur, Press Information Officer of the CBI, said, “A letter from defence ministry asking the CBI to conduct the probe has been received. The agency is in process of collection of relevant records and documents”. He, however, made it clear that the agency has not registered any case so far.

The agency is already scrutinising the land records of the Adarsh Cooperative housing society, which was handed over to the agency by the revenue department of the Maharashtra government few days ago. According to sources, scrutiny of the land records of the society, running into hundreds of pages, is expected to establish how and where the violation of the land use actually took place.
Defence minister A.K. Antony had announced on Tuesday that a CBI probe into the housing society scam, in which some senior army officials, including former army chiefs Gen. Deepak Kapoor and N.C. Vij, too had flats allotted in their names.
Sources further said, “The CBI had earlier initiated suo motu action in connection with various allegations pertaining to the society but has not got any cooperation so far from bureaucrats and politicians. Despite repeated reminders by the agency officials, there was no cooperation from those who are suspected to be part of the violation at all”. The agency will now start its full-fledged enquiry into the scam, sources said.
“If required the CBI will also consult Army and Navy personnel in connection with its probe into the scam. Both the Navy and Army have reportedly conducted their own internal inquiry respectively.
The agency will also probe the manner in which the occupation certificate was issued to the occupants of the society by the MMRDA,” sources said.
