CBI may move Portugal court on Abu Salem
The Central government on Wednesday said India will challenge in the constitutional court of Portugal the decision of that country’s Supreme Court to terminate the extradition of fugitive underworld don Abu Salem to face trial in several cases here.
Additional solicitor-General (ASG) Haren Raval informed the Delhi high court that the CBI will soon approach the constitutional court of Portugal against their apex court’s recent confirmation of the decision to nullify Salem’s extradition on the ground of violation of the conditions of extradition.
“The whole extradition process is in jeopardy. The CBI is going before the constitutional court of Portugal against the decision of the Supreme Court of that country,” Mr Raval told Justice Mukta Gupta.
Sources in the CBI said, “The Union government will soon file an appeal against the verdict of the Portuguese Supreme Court before the constitutional court there. The CBI has already sent draft of the appeal to the Union home ministry for its approval.
