CBI may send letters of request to two nations
Based on the questioning of Shahid Balwa, the CBI is likely to send letters of request (LRs) to a couple of countries seeking details of suspected financial and business transactions. The agency will seek details of financial and business transactions of certain telecom companies and officials of the DoT in connection with the probe related to 2G in its LRs.
The CBI recently sent its first LR to authorities concerned in Mauritius to know the source of funding to certain private telecom companies which were allotted 2G spectrum licences. According to sources on the basis of questioning of former telecom minister A. Raja and Mr Balwa, the agency is planning to send LR to authorities concerned in some other tax haven countries to also gather details about the alleged investments made by those who reportedly benefited from the 2G spectrum, sources said. The agency officials are now analysing the statements of Mr Raja and Mr Balwa, recorded by the CBI, and are trying to get further leads. The agency has recorded statements of all those who have been arrested and those who were called for questioning by the CBI, including top-brass of private telecom companies.
