CBI might grill Kalmadi again today, arrests likely

The CBI, which is investigating various cases of alleged corruption in the conduct of the Commonwealth games (CWG), is likely to question chairman of the Organising Committee (OC) Mr Suresh Kalmadi again on Monday.

According to sources Mr Kalmadi is likely to be questioned by the agency in connection with alleged irregularities in CWG contracts related to overlays, time, scoring and result (TSR) system, sponsorship and ticketing.
“This will be Kalmadi’s second round of questioning. Earlier, he was questioned by the agency officials on January 5 in connection with alleged irregularities committed in awarding CWG contracts for the Queen’s Baton Relay held in London last year,” sources said. Sources further said the agency may make some “significant arrests” in connection with its probe related to the QBR very soon.
The agency has already questioned OC secretary-general Lalit Bhanot, V.K. Verma (director-general) and another official R.K. Sacheti in connection with its probe into various cases of alleged corruption in the conduct of the games.
The CBI had earlier conducted raids at the residences of Kalmadi, Bhanot, Sacheti and Sangeeta Welingkar, member of the Games Image and Look Group.
The agency has so far filed four FIRs in connection with alleged irregularities in the Games.
Sources in the CBI said that the agency would soon register a separate FIR in connection with its probe into the financial transactions between OC and Australian company Sports Management and Marketing (SMAM) also. The Australian firm and its subsidiary companies had been authorised by the OC to get sponsorships for the Games. As per contract, the Australian firm would get 23 per cent commission by the OC for each sponsorship.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
