CBI moves SC to cancel Chandra bail
The CBI has filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to Sanjay Chandra, MD of Unitech Ltd who is facing trial in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, on the ground that he had attempted to interfere in the investigation against him.
Mr Chandra was earlier, in a recorded conversation leaked to the media, found to be discussing certain aspects of the trial into the matter with public prosecutor A.K. Singh, who was then removed from the case.
Alleging that Mr Chandra violated the terms and conditions of the bail granted to him, the agency has sought recall of the Supreme Court’s Novem-ber 23, 2011 order by which he was granted bail. Intere-stingly, the agency has not taken any action against Mr Singh other than removing him as prosecutor in the case. The CBI has alleged that Mr Chandra’s conduct was questionable during the period of bail as he was found to be discussing crucial aspects, including the deposition by some witnesses, with the then prosecutor.

Congress plans early elections?

With the government finally taking a call to promulgate an ordinance to roll out legal food entitlement, the buzz in the political circle is that the Congress-led UPA leadership is now toying with the ideal of going to polls early and may not even convene the monsoon session of Parliament.
Even doubts are being raised if the government intends to convene the next monsoon session of Parliament. “If session of the Parliament is convened, the government would be obliged to get its food ordinance passed before the session ends and the UPA is not sure of its number in either Houses, it would be politically prudent for the ruling party to go for early elections riding the aam aadmi plank,” keen political observers believe.
Sources in the Congress are also of the view that since the party leadership was anticipating obstructions on the floor of the Houses of parliament, there was no option but to promulgate the ordinance. “Our party and leaders — both Soniaji and Rahulji — are committed to food security law, there was no option but to go for the ordinance,” they said.
Even the Opposition leaders are sensing that the urgency is leading towards early elections.
