CBI must probe fund misuse, says Mahanta
The rampant corruption, exposed by the CAG in its two separate reports on Assam, continue to rock the state with the opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Saturday asking the ruling Congress Party to order CBI probe into the misappropriation of government fund brought to light by CAG.
Accusing the Congress ministers of amassing huge property by misappropriating the government fund, former chief minister and leader of the Opposition Prafulla Kumar Mahanta extensively quoted CAG reports published for the first time by this newspaper pointing out misappropriation of more than `2,000 crores in 19 offices of seven departments.
He accused that chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who holds the finance and home departments, was responsible for the complete financial disorder and misappropriation of the fund.
Regretting that the state government failed to take any action on misappropriation of `1.46 crores in the name of counter-insurgency operation, Mr Mahanta said that it proves that funds were misappropriated with the consent of the political leadership of the state.
Pointing out that chief minister and his ministers were caught hiding their disproportionate assets, former chief minister also slammed the Gogoi government for giving misleading account of their assets. “Though they have disclosed very few assets in declaration, by showing the prices of immoveable assets much below the market price, they have contradicted their own claims,” said Mr Mahanta.
He added that Mr Gogoi has been harping that one of the prime indicators of improving law and order situation of the state was the booming prices of land and real estate.
