CBI: OC paid before deals
In a startling revelation, the CBI probe into the Commonwealth games (CWG) contracts has revealed the organising committee (OC) allegedly made advance payments to certain contractors even before finalising the contract.
The agency probe into the alleged irregularities committed in awarding the contract related to the appointment of a Switzerland-based company as technical consultant for the Games has revealed that an advance payment of $2 lakhs was reportedly made to the company much before the contract was finalised. The CBI has registered a “preliminary enquiry” (PE) in this connection.
“The agency has now decided to convert its PE into a regular case. The CBI will soon register a regular case in this regard. The agency is also planning to question former OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi in this connection,” sources said.
Sources further said, “Scrutiny of the documents, recovered by the agency officials, has revealed that an advance payment of $2 lakhs was allegedly made to a Switzerland-based company for the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) held in Pune in 2008. The payment was made from the account of the organising committee on July 17, 2006, much before finalising the contract.” The Swiss company was appointed technical consult for both Games, sources added.
