CBI to quiz extradited Israeli drug lord Atala

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will start with formal interrogation of Israeli drug lord Yaniv Benaim alias Atala the next week, after getting his custody, a high-ranking officer said.

Deputy Inspector General (CBI), Pravin Salunke said the agency will file application seeking the custody in the court on Monday.

Atala, a prime link in the police-drug mafia nexus cases, was extradited from Peru on Friday and presented before the court here, which remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody. Salunke said he will come down from Mumbai to interrogate Atala.

CBI is investigating three cases where policemen are suspected to be mixed up with rackets run by two Israeli drug lords -- Atala and David Driham alias Dudu.

Goa home minister Ravi Naik's son too has been named in one of the cases.

Atala was arrested here last year. His confession led to arrest of seven policemen for smuggling out seized narcotics from the police custody and pushing them into the underworld drug market on Goa's coastal belt.

But subsequently Atala jumped the bail, and was re-arrested at Peru airport while trying to enter that country. He told the court here on bringing back that he feared for his life, so he fled.

The case was earlier being probed by Crime Branch, but later High Court handed it over to CBI.
