CBI registers 17 cases, 9 in Delhi
In a week-long drive carried out against spurious, sub-standard and unauthorised manufacture and sale of drugs, as well as against adulteration of petroleum products, the CBI has registered a total of 17 cases all over the country. The drive began on May 12.
The agency carried out 85 joint surprise checks, along with officials of the oil companies, following which it registered 11 cases. These pertained to diversion of kerosene oil meant for the public distribution system being diverted in the open market, besides selling of sub-standard and adulterated fuel.
A CBI official said that the agency has registered nine cases in this connection in the capital alone. The other two cases have been registered in Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai. The five cases registered by the CBI related to diversion of naphtha, pentane, special boiling point solvent and other petroleum products. These firms purchased the products from Kandla port and various units of GAIL for further distillation and sale in the market as per set conditions. But, in gross violation of the terms, these firms diverted a total of 78,45,982 litres of naphtha and 3,371.58 metric tonnes of pentane. These products were mixed with petrol and diesel and caused a loss worth Rs 6 crore to the government.
In Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, the accused persons were found to be involved in pilferage of motor spirit and high speed diesel, while selling them unauthorisedly in the market. The agency also carried out joint surprise checks at 62 places in connection with the spurious drugs, which were being sold to central government health services the dispensaries.
