CBI rescrutinises call details of Gujarat cops

In connection with its probe into the Sadiq Jamal encounter case, the CBI sleuths have again started scrutinising call record details of senior Gujarat police officers who have been accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. Sources in the agency said call records are being scrutinised to probe the conspiracy which led to both encounters.

“Scrutiny of the call record details of the accused cops will soon be completed as agency is preparing to file supplementary chargesheets in both encounter cases”, sources said. The CBI probe into Sadiq Jamal case has revealed that Gujarat cops allegedly used same weapons to kill the Bhavnagar resident which they had used in the alleged fake encounter of Mumbai-based teenager Ishrat Jahan in 2004. Jamal, a resident of Bhavnagar, was killed in an alleged fake encounter by Gujarat police in Ahmedabad on January 13, 2003.
Sources further said scrutiny of the call record details of accused cops may provide certain vital clues to the CBI which is probing conspiracy behind both encounters. “There are allegations that the accused Gujarat cops had spoken to certain politicians in the state a day before the encounter of Mumbai-based teenager”, sources said. The agency may examine some politicians, if required, before filing supplementary chargesheets in both cases, sources added.
The CBI on December 21, 2012 had filed a chargesheet against eight accused police officials in Sadiq Jamal case, including dy SP Tarun Barot, for the charges under Sections 120b (criminal conspiracy), 114 (abatement), 345 (illegal confinement), 365 (abduction) and 302 (murder) of IPC. The agency in its chargesheet categorically mentioned that the CBI identified a weapon which was used in both encounters, sources said.
Meanwhile, CBI is also probing the role of certain former officials of the Intelligence Bureau, including Rajendra Kumar (former special director) in both encounter cases. While Jamal was killed near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda area in Ahmedabad on January 13, 2003, Ishrat and three others—Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar — were gunned down by the Gujarat crime branch police near Kotarpur.
