CBI seeks fresh clarifications
The CBI is considering to seek fresh clarification from certain coal producing states and state government-run Public Sector Underta-kings as part of its probe into the Coalgate scam.
According to sources allocations of at least 22 captive coal blocks to state PSUs are under the scanner of the CBI. Total 70 captive coal blocks were allocated to central and state PSUs between 1993 and 2009. The states where coal blocks were allocated to PSUs include, West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkh-and, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Sources further said, “The state government PSUs who were allocated blocks include—Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation Limited, West Bengal Mineral Development Trading Corporation, Jhark-hand State Mineral Development Corpora-tion and Maharshtra State Mining Corpora-tion”. The CBI on Septe-mber 28 had registered a “Preliminary Enquiry” to probe alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks to PSUs during 1993 to 2009.
“Immediately after registering PE, the agency had sought certain documents from three state-government run PSUs. The PSUs provided all relevant documents sought by the agency. After scrutiny of the documents provided by the PSUs, the CBI is now planning to seek fresh clarification from the PSUs as well as coal supplying states”, the sources said.
