CBI to vet ‘big’ bank drafts
New Delhi, Feb. 14: The CBI is probing how certain telecom companies could submit bank drafts of `1,600 crore and other documents within a very short span of time.
The CBI on Monday secured custody of Mr Balwa and Mr A Raja, former telecom minister, for four more days.
The role of the former telecom minister, Mr A. Raja, and certain DoT officials is being examined in this regard, sources said. “It is being probed whether everything was pre-fixed.”
The probe revealed that, apart from DB Realty, some other telecom companies allegedly released funds to Kalaignar TV for which the agency is now planning fresh rounds of grilling of Mr Raja and Mr Balwa.
Earlier, the agency was probing only alleged payments made by Mr Balwa to Kalaignar TV, sources said, adding now evidence with the probe agency indicates that other private telecom companies also paid money. The agency is also expected to make more arrests of certain representatives of private telecom companies, sources said.
The agency has established that Swan submitted documents for Unified Access Service (UAS) licence for AP, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Chennai and UP-East at 6.15 pm on January 10, 2008. Between 6.20 pm and 6.25 pm, it submitted documents for Karnataka, Kerala and Punjab, sources added.
