Centre to corner states on terror preparedness
In a move to counter the states’ objections to the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Centre is set to put a question mark on the preparedness of the states as they have failed to provide adequate intelligence inputs for the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC).
In Monday’s meeting of chief ministers on internal security, the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) will lay out figures relating to the functioning of the MAC with respect to the Centre’s contribution in providing intelligence inputs (97 per cent) and the states, which account only for three per cent. However, given the Centre-states standoff over the NCTC, such posturing by the MHA may further antagonise the states when they meet to exclusively discuss the NCTC on May 5.
UPA ally and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who has opposed the NCTC, is expected to skip Monday’s conference, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Some new faces, including Akhilesh Yadav from Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa, will attend the meet.
