Centre mulls meet of Andhra parties
In an effort to discuss the recommendations of Srikrishna Committee on Telangana and find a solution to the statehood issue the Centre is contemplating to convene a meeting of recognised political parties of Andhra Pradesh before the Republic Day.
Sources stated that union home minister P. Chidambaram is soon likely to call a meeting of all political parties again to get their views on the report.
“The government is expected to take a decision on the recommendations of the committee possibly before the Budget Session of Parliament starting in February-end,” sources added.
A decision about the possible date of the meeting is expected to be taken at a high-level meeting scheduled to be held on Monday.
The need for calling another round of meeting was felt as three major parties — TRS, TDP and BJP — did not participate in the January 6 meeting. Sources stated that the Centre was expecting participation of all the eight parties in the upcoming meeting on Telangana. However, it is not clear how many representatives will be invited from each party.
Since two representatives were invited for the January meeting, the TRS had alleged that the Centre wanted a split opinion from each party, leading to its boycott.
The Srikrishna Committee gave six options to find a solution to the Telangana issue. As part of the exercise to find an amicable solution, union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had also met some MPs from Andhra Pradesh.
