Centre relook at Naxal policy July 14
The Centre will take a relook at its anti-Naxal strategy in a meeting with chief ministers of the Naxal-affected states on July 14. The meeting, expected to be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will discuss the proposals placed before the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which includes appointing military advisers to the
Naxal-hit states, setting up of Army’s sub-area headquarters in Chattisgarh and putting in place a ‘’unified command’’ of security forces in states to tackle the rising Maoist violence. The Centre will ask the states to take immediate steps to fortify posts and review deployment of security forces as well as fast track developmental schemes undertaken under the aegis of the Planning Commission.
The operational and infrastructural aspects of the ongoing anti-Naxal operations will come up for a separate review when the police chiefs of all states meet Dr Singh and home minister P. Chidambaram during the annual DGPs conference slated for August 25.
The Union home ministry on Tuesday issued an alert to the railways to step up vigil and take all possible steps to foil any attempt of violence, including hostage-like situations, ahead of the two-day bandh called by the Naxals to protest killing of their leader Azad.
