CG: Marines solely responsible for deaths of two fishermen
In a new twist to the Italian ship’s firing incident, a report by the Coast Guard points out that the two navy personnel arrested for the firing were solely responsible for the death of two Indian fishermen.
In a report, the CG clarified that no coordination existed between the naval personnel and the watch keepers of the vessel and the wheel house.
“The vessel was following two separate watches, one for watch keeping in the bridge by the vessel's crew, and the other for security purpose by the Italian Naval detachment at the wings of the bridge.”
“The naval detachment guards were manning the bridge wings. The boarding teams also observed that the bridge, and the bridge wings, had been separated by a strong door, with toughened glass.
It was evident that no coordination existed between the wheel house watch keepers and those of the Naval vessel protection detachment who were manning the bridge wings,” the CG report stated
The Coast Guard had earlier pointed out that the firing incident occurred in violation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations.
According to legal experts, the report will be handy for the prosecution to prove that the two Italians were behind the firing.
