Chandramohan plea: SC notice to bar council
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Bar Council of India on a petition of suspended Tamil Nadu Bar Council chairman R.K. Chandramohan on the charge of acting as a middleman on behalf of former telecom minister A. Raja in a bid to “fix” his relatives bail case.
The BCI’s reply was sought by a bench of Justices D.K. Jain and H.L. Dattu after Chandramonah’s counsel argued that the HC had passed the order in the matter on a PIL by advocate E.R. Rajendran on a “hear say” PIL as he was not witness to the alleged conversation between Mr Chandramohan and Justice R Reghupathy, who had rebuked him for his alleged attempt.
The SC judges said that they were only on short question whether the HC has power to suspend the chairman of state bar council.
The HC had recommended sending of the complaint against Mr Chandramohan to BCI, the apex regulator for further action.
Meanwhile, Mr Rajendran’s lawyer Prashant Bhushan sought placing of the letter of Justice Reghupathy sent to the than Madras high court Chief Justice H.L. Gokahle on record.
