Chaos over CWG forces LS adjournment
The issue of large-scale corruption in the organisation of the Commonwealth Games 2010 rocked the Lok Sabha forcing Speaker Meira Kumar to adjourn the House amidst heated exchanges between the treasury and the Opposition benches.
The issue was raised by CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta during the Zero Hour when he alleged that reports of various corruption charges against the organisers of the CWG indicated loot of public money.
“This is a very serious issue. The government should make a statement on the developments,” said Mr Dasgupta.
The issue snowballed into a controversy as the Speaker allowed SP MP Rewati Raman Singh and CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharia also to speak on the issue but not the others.
Irked over this, leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj requested the Speaker to allow time to her party MP Yogi Adityanath and Kirti Azad besides JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav too.
“There is a bungling of around Rs 1 lakh crore behind the Games,” charged JD(U) MP Sharad Yadav.
BJP MP Kirti Azad wondered how the CWG organising committee could spend more money on renovation of old stadia when it could have got new ones constructed with much less cost.
Asking the PM to intervene in the matter, the Samajwadi Party led by Mulayam Singh Yadav staged a walkout in protest.
As the Opposition MPs lambasted the organisers of the CWG and highlighted reports of the financial irregularities denting the image of the prestigious sports event and the level of unpreparedness, Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam lost no opportunity to put up a spirited defence.
