'Chardham' yatra remains suspended due to rains
'Chardham' yatra in Garhwal Himalayas remained suspended for the second consecutive day on Thursday due to landslides triggered by incessant rains.
Landslides struck a number of places leading to the four shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, forcing the administration to halt the pilgrimage, Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre (DMMC) said.
The Police, PAC, BRO and ITBP personnel have been pressed into service to clear the debris and reopen roads for vehicular traffic, it said.
Met office here said Joshimath received the maximum rainfall at 51 mm followed by Nainital with 41 mm, Dehradun 40 mm, Deoprayag 38 mm and Haldwani 37 mm since yesterday.
Continuous rains also pushed the water levels in Ganga and Yamuna above the danger mark in Rishikesh and Haridwar prompting the authorities to issue an alert in the area.
Uttarakhand has so far received 25 per cent more rains this monsoon than the average and more than 100 persons have died in rains-related incidents this year.
Over 150 houses collapsed in different areas due to heavy rains which also damaged 945 roads and bridges and standing crops worth Rs 175 cr.
