Charges framed in Purkayastha murder case

The crime branch on Tuesday filed its chargesheet in the sensational murder of Pallavi Purkayastha in Wadala earlier this year.
Pallavi was murdered in her Wadala residence, which she shared with her live-in partner Avik Sengupta in August this year. The crime branch had gone on to arrest Sajjad Pathan, a security guard of building who had been stalking her, and had also made some advances, after which she had insulted him. Pathan had fled the building soon after killing Pallavi and was nabbed from near the Mumbai Central railway station. The chargesheet includes forensic evidence, call data records and statements of 47 witnesses and has charged Pathan with murder as well as house trespassing. “We had earlier included molestation in the FIR against Pathan. However, during inquiries, we did not find any evidence confirming molestation, even though the intention was definitely present,” said an officer.

An I-T department source said that the teams were questioning people
related to the shell companies, including the directors as well as those in the vicinity of “offices”, to gather information about the kind of work that was carried out in there.
“So far, nothing substantial has come out of the searches and these offices as well as the people do not seem like they could be companies doing any direct corporate work at all. We will look into the financial dealings to understand why the loan was needed by these companies. As of now, they are not even organised with their paper-work. It will take a while before something can be ascertained,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
Sources said if the companies are not able to explain the sources of money, then it will be considered tax-evasion and they would be penalised accordingly.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
