Chargesheet against German Bakery blast mastermind filed
The Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad on Saturday filed the chargesheet against Mirza Himayat Baig (29), the alleged mastermind behind the German Bakery bomb blast in Pune that killed 17 people and injured 56 in February, 2010.
The chargesheet, which runs into several hundred pages, was submitted before judicial magistrate Swarup Bose by public prosecutor A.V. Ausekar.
Baig was arrested by the ATS on September 7, 2010 in Pune, and is currently in judicial custody. He is alleged to be the head of the Maharashtra unit of the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and is believed to have been instrumental in initiating contact and developing links between the LeT and the Indian Mujahideen.
The anti-terrorism squad has declared six more persons to be wanted in the German bakery blast case. Baig has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code as well as provisions of the Explosives Substances Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
Mr Ausekar, while submitting the chargesheet, requested the court that the identities and addresses of witnesses who will be deposing in the case be kept secret.
“It is essential to bear in mind that the co-conspirators and the co-accused are still at large and therefore, considering the magnitude and seriousness of the offence and threat to the security of the witnesses in this case, their names and addresses should be kept secret,” Mr Avsekar said, urging the court to take any necessary measures for the same under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The prosecution has also requested permission to serve truncated copies of the chargesheet to Baig.
