Chargesheet filed against 57 accused
The crime branch on Friday filed a 3,384-page chargesheet in the Azad Maidan violence case of August 11. The chargesheet has been filed against 57 accused of whom 45 are currently out on bail. Senior officers said that none of the five persons who delivered speeches has been made an accused as investigations have revealed that the violence was not triggered because of provocative speeches.
Two youths were killed and 92, including 44 policemen, were injured after the crowd turned violent on August 11 at Azad Maidan where a rally to protest the atrocities on Muslims at Assam and Burma was organised by Madina Tul-ilm supported by Raza Academy.
Of the arrested accused, two, namely Yusuf Ahmed Hussain Khan and Sayyed Salim Anwar Pasha, are charged with conspiring to engineer riots.
“We have filed a 3,384 page chargesheet in the case that includes statements of 851 witnesses. Of these, 736 are statements of government servants including policemen, 86 citizens and 29 journalists. 47 panchnamas are also a part of the chargesheet,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, crime.
